Personal Project: Movie Titles

Just a little personal project I worked on this afternoon, involving some new fonts downloaded <em>(Liberator and Onramp - http://www.losttype.com/browse/)</em>, some textures from Subtle Patterns (http://subtlepatterns.com), and some layer styles I found quite a while ago.

After I got the text out of the way, I applied a <strong>Lens Correction</strong> filter, with a <strong>Fix Red/Cyan Fringe</strong> setting of <strong>+100</strong> to the <em>Attack of the Green Men From Mars</em> text, to give it a sort of retro, arcade game feel.

I also applied a <strong>Lens Correction</strong> filter, with a <strong>Vignette</strong> amount of <strong>-100</strong> to the background texture.

As always, feel free to let me know what you think! I'm looking for advice for the base of the monitor actually. I had a hard time getting a gradient I was happy with to recreate the round base for the monitor. Any constructive criticism, critiques, or other suggestions are always welcome!

Found Online: A Type of Joke (Why So Serious?)

Why so serious? This is one of the greatest Joker related artworks I've ever seen, as well as being one of the most amazing typographical pieces I've ever seen! And it's available as a full size print!

Personal Project: Dual Monitors

<b>Here's a higher quality version of the monitor for those interested: http://www.kellylawrence.ca/OTHER/Monitor.jpg</b>

After a long break from personal weekend projects, I've finally gotten around to creating something new! This weekend, I wanted to recreate my dual monitor setup in Photoshop. This is the result of that goal! The only parts that weren't recreated by me from scratch are the Samsung logo/font, and the Energy Star logo at the top right of each monitor. The rest of the monitor, including the frame, and touch sensetive buttons <i>(Text and shapes)</i> at the bottom right were all created using Photoshop's various shape tools.

While I took some liberties in the design (Font's aren't 100% accurate, but a very close match IMO), I did actually break out a tape measure to get the dimensions down as close as I could. This meant working with CM's within Photoshop... something I have never had to before, which was quite interesting!

As for the two monitors in question, they are 20" Samsung SyncMaster 2043nw's. I orignally only had one when I bought my computer, around the time when Samsung stopped selling the monitors. After almost two and a half years, I was able to find a second one through a online classified ad, and haven't looked back since purchasing it! The ability to have a website design open in Photoshop on one screen, while coding/developing that design into a theme on the other is something I can't imagine not having the ability to do.

As always, feel free to let me know what you think! I'm looking for advice for the base of the monitor actually. I had a hard time getting a gradient I was happy with to recreate the round base for the monitor. Any constructive criticism, critiques, or other suggestions are always welcome!

Back to Basics After Effects Video

A very short video, showcasing my first After Effects work in over a year. Just getting a feel for things again in this video, and trying out some particle, lighting, and lens flare effects.

Let me know what you think! If you have any questions or constructive criticism, please don't hesitate to leave a message in the comments! I'd really appreciate it!

Personal Project: Business Card

This weekend, I wanted to try my hand at creating a simple, clean looking business card. Business card creation isn't something I have much experience with <i>(Other then my own personal business card)</i>, so I wanted to try creating something that would easily stand out in a bunch of other business cards.

I intended to use my usual shade of green <i>(#0C5)</i> for the circle, but I couldn't get the plaid texture to show up properly while still keeping the same shade. With that in mind, I set the layer style for the pattern to difference, resulting in a striking shade of purple/pink. While I probably wouldn't actually go with this color if I were ever to get a set of cards like this printed, I thought it was suited quite well to what I wanted to achieve with this project.

And now for some specifics about the design itself. Fonts used include Titillium <i>(600wt, 250wt & 1wt)</i> for the main text, and Lindsey for the ampersand. The textures used can be found at http://subtlepatterns.com, and the colors used include pure white <i>(#FFF)</i> and green <i>(#0C5)</i> for the circle, with the layer style of the pattern set to "Difference", resulting in a purple shade <i>(Roughly #DC1087)</i>.

Personal Project: Monolith

Another weekend, another personal project. <i>(True, this one is a day late, but I started working on it at 11:00pm last night, so I'm still going to count it!)</i> This weekend, I wanted to create something based on some influences from the new X-Com video game and 2001: A Space Odyssey <i>(Which admittedly, I've never seen).</i> Specific inspiriation includes: http://bit.ly/j8HH7i, http://bit.ly/j8se0m, and http://bit.ly/llbbM7.

Everything was created in Photoshop, with the background images coming from MorgueFile.com <i>(http://mrg.bz/N1jfno)</i> The same image was horizontally flipped and used for the reflection on the <i>"Monolith's"</i> themselves. The <i>"Monolith"</i> text coming out of the water is Titillium <i>(Not sure what size, font weight, etc. as I had to rasterize it to remove the bottom to match the horizon)</i>.

I'm actually looking some some help on this one. Specifically, what would you recommend to create the illusion of shadows for the <i>"Monolith's"</i> themselves. They're supposed to appear to be floating in the sky, but I wasn't sure how to go about pulling off the shadow look last night while working on the piece, so any suggestions are more then welcome!

Personal Project: Vol. 6

After finally finding some time for myself, I've finally been able to create my sixth <b>Make Something Cool Every Weekend</b> project! This one was was inspired by some of the recent design work I've seen on the IGN website <i>(http://guidesmedia.ign.com/guides/uni/IGNE_e3nav.png)</i> as part of their E3 coverage.

I wanted to recreate a similar look with a high contrast focal point <i>(The red circle in this case)</i>, and some thin fonts <i>(Titillium, my personal favorite)</I>. I never intended to have the focus on the ampersand as seen in this final shot, but after playing around, I realized that I never give ampersands their due! I'm not dead set on the one I've used in this snap <i>(Lynda for the font geeks out there)</I>, so if you can think of a better font to go with for the ampersand in question, feel free to suggest one!

The background from this snap can be found at http://www.morguefile.com/archive/display/228170. As always, feel free to let me know what you think. Any constructive criticism, critiques, or other suggestions are always welcome!

Personal Project: Mountain City Movers Logo

<b><i>A follow up on an earlier snap. As per some members request, I've widened the divider between the two mountains, matched up the spacing between the mountains and the text below, as well as made sure both mountains/triangles were equilateral! You can view the original snap here http://forrst.com/posts/Mountain_City_Movers_Logo-9p2</i></b>

After a number of busy weekends with client work, I've finally found some time for myself, resulting in my second <b>Make Something Cool Every Weekend</b> project this weekend! This one was was just based on a personal interest to design a simple, eye catching logo. I've never professionally designed a logo before, but it's something I wouldn't mind getting into, to add another service to what I already offer to my clients.

As I'm sure is quite obvious, Mountain City Movers is a fake company, but I'd assume they would want something that had to do with their name, and service area. I briefly lived out in Vancouver, BC for two months while I was an intern at a large studio, and I was always fascinated by the scenery, especially the mountains. Long story short, I wanted to give this quick logo design a shot, and I think it turned out pretty good! As always, feel free to let me know what you think, and provide and constructive criticism that you can!

Personal Project: Awesome Forrst Badge!

Hey everyone! After a number of busy weekends with client work, I've finally found some time for myself, resulting in my first "Make Something Cool Every Weekend" project in a few weeks! This one was created after seeing a number of logos being created recently with a circular/stitched material look to them.

I wanted to give it a shot, and I think it turned out pretty good! Feel free to let me know what you think!

Personal Project: Frank Edora Movie Poster

Hey everyone! This fake movie poster for "Frank Edora And the Case of the Golden Tikki" is something I'm working on for my third "Make Something Cool Every Weekend" personal project (A little early, I know).

I'm just looking for any critiques, constructive criticism, advice, tips, etc. that you feel could help to make this a better poster! I'm seriously considering getting a copy of the poster printed for myself at a local shop in town whenever I deem it finished and ready for printing!

I've used a variety of fonts to create this poster including "Chinese Rocks" for the Frank Edora And the Case of the Golden text, "Folk" for the Tikki text as well as the creation of the aforementioned "Tikki", and "Melbourne" for the credits text featured at the bottom of the poster.

To create the the old, warn out poster effect, I used the "Create Noise" and "Distort > Lens Correction" effects in Photoshop.
