Eli Pariser: Beware online "filter bubbles"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ofWFx525s

I saw a link to this TED Talk on Reddit and it blew my mind.

Obviously, this has huge ramifications with regard to how we see the world through the lens of the Internet.

QUESTION: Do web developers and corporations such as Google, Facebook, etc. have a social responsibility to deliver not only the content that users wants to see, but the content they need to see?

What Are Your SEO Tips and Tricks?

I'm curious, besides the basic, correct use of markup, keyword density, etc. what do you do to try and boost your SEO?

For instance whenever I complete a site I always submit the URL to DMOZ, Yahoo Directory and Google Places (if applicable). I also Tweet about the new site, and encourage link exchanges with other relevant websites.

Naturally, the results of our SEO efforts are ultimately in the hands of the search engines themselves. However, there's a lot that can still be done to distinguish the visibility of one site from another.

NOTE: I'm describing SEO techniques, not SEM or Behavioral Targeting which are huge subjects on their own right.

I came across this gallery of CSS3 patterns while browsing Reddit and I thought I'd pass it along.

This gives me some interesting ideas...

What are your favorite ExpressionEngine extensions/modules/plugins?

I love developing in EE, but a lot of it's flexibility comes from the 3rd party extensions/plugins and modules. These are some of my favorites:

  • CE Image - Plugin - Awesome plugin for cropping, resizing and filtering images on the fly.
  • NSM Better Meta - Extension - Extension that adds easy to use editing of meta tags to channel entries.
  • Playa - Extension - Extension that allows complex relationships between channel entries.
  • Matrix - Extension - Creates a custom field type that allows you to create complex, variable data entry.
  • Freeform - Module - Allows you save form submissions to a db within EE in addition to lots of other functionality.

If you're an EE developer what do you use most often? What are your favorites?

What are your favorite books on the principles of design?

My favorites are still the classics:

  • Megg's History of Graphic Design - Philip B. Meggs
  • The Elements of Typographic Style - Robert Bringhurst
  • Grid Systems in Graphic Design - Josef Muller-Brockmann

Design for a local scandinavian furniture store

Scan Design is sort of like a franchise, but they all operate (and market) independently. This store is based in my hometown of Fargo, ND.

I wanted to keep some cohesion between this design and existing modern, scandinavian furniture store websites including the primary Scan Design site (scandesign.com).

The primary image (with the TV, which is a stock photo) will be a slideshow and will include text and promotions in the final site.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

**EDIT:** I updated the snap to reflect the most recent changes.

Best Billing / Time Tracking Software?

I've used Billings by Markecircle for about 2 years and I love it, but I haven't really tried any others. It combines my estimation, invoicing, record keeping and time tracking processes into one application which I like. Plus it now has an iPhone application.

I'm a solo operation so for only $40 it's totally worth it.

What do you use and why?

Best Project Management Software?

I'm currently looking at getting some project management software to improve my workflow, and project scheduling.

Do you use any software for project management? If so, what software and why?

EDIT: FYI I'm mostly a solo operation, but I outsource some work occasionally.
