So, you have a reason to change your primary domain, and you don’t know how to do it on BlueHost? Well, no worries! In this post, we are going to share the two straightforward ways to do it.

  1. 1
    You can do it manually
  2. 2
You can take help of BlueHost support

But, before you choose either route, you need to know a few things.

Things you should know before starting the process

  • Depending on the size of the account, the process can take up to five hours. In general, it takes no more than a couple of hours.
  • Though the passwords, files/folders, or databases won’t be tampered during the process, it’s wise & recommended to take a full backup. If you are using WordPress, a free plugin like UpdraftPlus will come in handy.
  • If you don’t know already, the primary domain always points to the public_html directory. Thus, it will be your responsibility to copy all the files of the new primary domain to the public_html directory. Plus, if you are considering using the old primary domain as an addon domain, all the files of that site will go in a folder under public_html.
  • The custom DNS configurations, Domain forwarders, and Cloudflare configurations will be deleted in the process. You will need to reconfigure if you want the same configurations back.

That’s about it. Once you know these four things, you can start the process of changing the primary domain.

To not fumble through the process, make sure you know your old primary domain, the new primary domain, and the last four characters of your cPanel password.

Now, let’s understand the process!
